These prints are part of the Volpini Suite, which comprises twelve works that were first made in 1889. Parisian dealer Ambrose Vollard purchased the plates and published more sets in 1894, and later sent some of them to the Armory Show. Gauguin wrote to Vincent van Gogh of them that he had started work on “a series of lithographs for publication in order to make myself known.” They helped bring him notice in New York, with over thirty-three selling at the Armory Show.
