Gallery C included works by Americans who were considered progressive in 1913, like the urban realist George Bellows. Maurice Prendergast showed the influence of Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh from his studies in Paris. Marsden Hartley was in Paris at the time of the Armory Show; he wrote excitedly to photographer and avant-garde gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz that the show would be like an earthquake.
